From Ms. Michele's Bench
This month, I’m not going to write about music, music education, or anything related to DAMA. Instead, I want to share a little about my world this week and ask for your thoughts and prayers.
I received one of those phone calls that makes you feel light-headed, the kind where your whole body is suddenly flooded with a heavy rush. My niece, who turned thirty in January, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia. The oncologist explained that it was not caused by anything genetic or environmental. It was a rare and devastating fluke.
She had been experiencing severe pain in her side and went to the ER where she was sent home and told to return if it worsened. When she went back a second time, doctors ran additional tests and that’s when they discovered the cancer. Thankfully, it was caught very early. If her body responds well to chemotherapy, she will still face three years of grueling treatment.
Alicia holds a master’s degree in biomedical engineering. She has a great job in San Diego, and she and her boyfriend had been talking about rings, weddings, and children.
I’m telling you about Alicia because she is an outstanding young woman who, until now, has never had any health problems. She could be any one of us.
I used to believe that major life crises didn’t happen to me or my family, that those things only happened to other people. It wasn’t until my younger brother died suddenly in 1997 that I learned how drastically life can change with a single phone call.
We can’t live our lives wondering or waiting for the next devastation to befall us. Instead, we have to face whatever comes our way, whether it is fair, expected, or completely out of our control.
Through grief, we learn what is truly important in life. It is so easy to take our gifts for granted. Today, hug a little longer. Think about the people you love, and tell them why they matter to you.
Thank you for taking a moment to hold Alicia in your thoughts. My hope is that this reminds us to count our blessings and cherish the people we are lucky enough to love.
Best,

MUSICAL HUMOR
