 Best Of Luck Abby!

Miss Abby began teaching piano and voice lessons at DAMA in March of 2023. As many of you know, she is a piano performance major at Metro State University and will be graduating in just a couple of months. Abby’s long-term goal is to build a career accompanying theatre productions and musical ensembles.

Right now, she is in the middle of preparing music for two shows while also serving as a pianist for a church on Sunday mornings. With the added demands of preparing for her senior recital and learning nearly 500 pages of music for these productions, her schedule

has become incredibly full and she is no longer able to continue teaching at this time.

We hope to still see Abby from time to time when she is able to join us as a guest teacher.

During her time at DAMA, Abby has made a truly wonderful impact on her students. She has been a thoughtful, dedicated teacher and will be greatly missed by all of us. We are so proud of everything she has accomplished and wish her the very best as she moves forward in this exciting next chapter of her musical career.

Please welcome our new Guitar Instructor

Steve Bartenhagen!

JSteve began piano at 6, added saxophone at 11, and discovered his passion for guitar at 12, forming his first band, Velvet Elvis. At 25, his band Won Lump Some was named Westword’s “Best Band You’ve Never Heard Of,” opened for artists including George Clinton and the P-Funk All-Stars, Mike Watt, Cat Power, and All, and released Clean Hits on Sh-mow Records. After earning a degree from San Francisco State University, he taught under Manuel Barrueco, opened a studio in Alameda, and now mentors musicians of all ages in Colorado across rock, blues, jazz, Brazilian, and classical styles.

Exceptional Student of the Month
February  2026

Benjamin Campbell has been taking piano lessons with Ms. Michele since March of 2024.

He has recently stepped up his practicing and it has paid off! He played a challenging song for the recital because he was determined to learn it, -the original version of Linus and Lucy (Peanuts Theme Song). He took it very, very slowly and was patient with himself. It was a proud moment when he performed at our Winter recital. This past month he learned another piece quickly because he stayed focused and practiced. Benjamin has such a great attitude and a fun sense of humor. Watch the video to learn more about him and to hear him play.

From Ms. Michele's Bench

As March rolls in with shamrocks and talk of the “luck of the Irish,” it’s a good time to think about what luck really means—and how often it shows up when we’re willing to put in the work.

Every once in a while I hear someone say about a successful person, “Wow, they’re so lucky.” At first glance, it can certainly look that way. We see a beautiful performance, a competition win, a great grade, or a musician who seems to play a piece effortlessly. From the outside, it can appear as though everything just fell into place. But the truth is, what often looks like luck is usually something else entirely.

Behind that “lucky” moment are hours of preparation that no one sees. There are the slow practice sessions, the wrong notes, the corrections, the days when motivation is low but the work gets done anyway. There are the small improvements that build up week after week until suddenly something wonderful happens.

The famous golfer Gary Player once said, “The harder I practice, the luckier I get.”

I love that quote because it reminds us that success rarely happens by accident.

Hard work creates opportunity. Preparation creates confidence. Consistency creates progress.

In music lessons, I see this all the time.

A student who practices regularly may not notice dramatic changes from one day to the next. But over time, their fingers become stronger, their reading improves, and their confidence grows. Then one day they perform in a recital or play a challenging piece beautifully and it might look like luck to someone watching. But we know better.

It was practice.
It was persistence.
It was the willingness to keep going even when something felt difficult.

One of the most valuable things students learn through music is that effort matters. Talent can open the door, but hard work is what carries someone through it.

So the next time something goes well, whether in music, school, sports, or life, it’s worth remembering that “luck” often has a lot to do with preparation and perseverance. And here at DAMA, we are very proud of the hard work our students put in every week.

Because the truth is…the harder you work, the luckier you get.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Best
