STUDENT OF THE YEAR 2025

First Ever

Simon Woods was named the first Denver Academy of Musical Arts Student of the Year for 2025!

Simon started taking piano lessons with Ms. Michele in September of 2022. In the last three years he has catapulted his level of playing to master pieces that likely would not even be attempted by most other piano students his age.

Simon was chosen for this award due to his dedication to learning and growing as a musician. He participated in piano competitions in 2023 and 2025 and will be competing again in February 2026. He regularly performs at Brookdale Senior Center where he represents DAMA proudly and he practices regularly and comes to his lessons well prepared.

Simon has decided to audition for the piano program at Denver School of the Arts in January and, if accepted, he'll be attending sixth grade there next year. Watch the video to learn more about this exceptional young man.

CONGRATULATIONS SIMON!

Exceptional Student of the Month
December  2025

Chloe Macias was named DAMA’s Exceptional Student of the Month for December 2025.

Chloe has been taking piano lessons with Ms. Michele since this June 2024. Chloe was chosen for this award because she put in a lot of time and effort the last couple of months practicing some very challenging songs for the recital.

As a student in her second year of lessons, she has been able to accomplish pieces that most beginning students would not even attempt. Chloe was also Student of the Month in September 2024 and she has either won or placed in the top three in the DAMA practice derby several times in 2025.

Chloe is such a great student! She comes to her lessons prepared and ready to learn. She has a great attitude and she has a fun sense of humor. Watch the video to learn more about Chloe and to hear her play.

CONGRATULATIONS CHLOE!!

From Ms. Michele's Bench

Our 2025 Winter Holiday Recital was filled with wonderful music, but what stayed with me most was not any particular piece or performance. It was the experience of watching a room full of people pause, sit quietly, and give their full attention to one child at a time.

In a world that moves quickly and constantly pulls at our attention, this is no small thing. For a few minutes, each student was seen and heard without interruption. No multitasking. No rushing. Just listening. Just a room full of people offering their presence. That kind of focused attention sends a powerful message: your child matters, and what they are sharing is worth listening to.

I also want to acknowledge that some students left the recital feeling disappointed in their performance. This is a very normal part of learning and growing, especially for children who care deeply. While it's a real bummer to feel discouraged after a performance, it may help to remember that the audience most likely experienced something very different. What families and friends saw was courage, effort, and a child willing to be vulnerable and share something meaningful

Long after the music fades, what tends to remain is the feeling of being supported. Standing in front of others and being met with patience, respect, and applause helps children internalize a sense of belonging and self-worth that extends far beyond music.

As I looked around the room at families, teachers, and fellow students listening so intently, I was reminded that recitals are about much more than music. They are about presence, connection, and the simple, yet profound, act of showing up for one another. Thank you for being part of a community that supports and understands the value of listening.

As we look ahead to 2026, my hope is that DAMA continues to be a place where children feel supported, encouraged, and truly seen. We will keep creating moments like this, moments where growth is honored, effort is respected, and every student knows they belong.

Thank you for trusting us with your children’s musical education. I’m grateful to be heading into 2026 with such a thoughtful, supportive community. Happy New Year!

Best,

MUSICAL HUMOR
