SUMMER CHANGES

Summer is a challenging time of year for scheduling lessons. With so many students going on vacations and attending camps, it is nearly impossible to keep everything straight. We give students the option to cancel 2 lessons during the summer for no charge. For students who will miss more than 2 lessons in the summer and still want to retain their lesson time for the rest of the Summer and the Fall, there are 2 options:

  1. For a reduced rate of $75 per month (4 consecutive missed lessons) we can hold a student's lesson day/time for missed lessons during the summer or

  2. Pay regular monthly lesson tuition and then cancel lessons as needed.

If you don't need to reserve a spot for the whole summer or the Fall, we can schedule summer lessons as they fit into your/our schedule but we can not reserve a specific day/time. Therefore, lessons would be whenever we have an opening and there isn't a guarantee that there will be availability in the Fall. But, we will add our returning students to  the top of the waiting list.

We feel this is the only fair way to handle the summer schedule since we have a waiting list of students who would be able to fill the spots that current students will miss this summer.  Therefore, even if you know ahead of time which weeks your child can attend a lesson but you decide not to reserve that day/time for the entire summer, then we can only schedule one week prior to the day/time you are requesting and we can't guarantee we will have the day/time that you need. For example, if you know your son or daughter will be in town July 8th, we can not go ahead and put that on our schedule now unless you have reserved that day/time for the entire summer. If you did not reserve that day/time for the entire summer, you would need to contact us no more than 1 week prior to July 8th to schedule a lesson.  Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Please note these changes during the summer months:

  • There will be no tickets or raffles until September.

  • There will be one "Student of the Month" awarded in August for the entire summer.

  • Students may cancel up to 2 lessons between June 1- August 20 for no charge (see above).

  • Please give as much notice as you can about cancellations so we can reschedule if necessary.

AND...

The end of the school year marks a wonderful time to evaluate how much students have learned.  We will be conducting assessments in June. It isn't for a grade. It's simply to see how far students have come and the areas that we will concentrate on going forward.

AND...

We recently opened up the week of June 20th for 3-5th graders for Summer Camp and are looking to add a few more students. Who do you know that may be interested? There is a $25 prize for each student you refer who signs up for camp.  THANK YOU for your help!

From Miss Michele's Bench

WOW! The recitals were amazing! Thank you all so much

for making the time to attend and to celebrate and  honor

your child's progress. It takes SO much courage to get up in front of

people and do anything, let alone something that takes focus and

concentration.  I'm just so proud of them! It would mean so much to me if you would forward any great pics from the recital.  I didn't get any because, well, I was sorta busy. :)

I don't know about you, but I'm really looking forward to summer.  There is something magical about a summer evening around 8-8:30pm (I'm sure it's just as magical in the morning, but I'm not a morning person so I don't know for sure).  Remember playing outside with your friends until it was starting to get too dark to see the kickball anymore?  You'd go inside the house with coating of sweat and dirt on your arms and legs.  Remember taking your shoes off and there'd be a ring of dirt on the part of your socks that was exposed to air?  And your feet would look 5 shades paler than your legs?  Speaking of feet...oh, that smell! Only the chemicals in a pool can mask that distinctive odor.   I think that's why I'm so fond of  summer. It's all the smells:  BBQ, chlorine, flowers, dirt on a baseball field,  my kid's sweaty heads after the baseball game, the damp air after a summer rain, sunscreen, freshly cut grass. And, on occasion, the smells of vacations: the salty air near the ocean, wet sand, waffle cones and the waft of bacon that hits you when you enter a Denny's off of Route 66.   There's no other time of year quite like summer.

I hope you all enjoy your family time this June.  As always, thank you so very much for the opportunity to spend time with your children and be a part of their musical journey! Be sure to fit some practice time in in between your adventures.

Recital Rehearsal

The Friday before the recital, 5/20, there will be an opportunity to practice performing in front of other students. This is a way for students to get a feel for the big piano and learn what it feels like to play with nervous excitement...or maybe not the excitement part.

Performing is a skill that can only be practiced in front of an audience.  During rehearsal I encourage students to mess up and feel what that feels like and I'll show them what to do if that happens during a real performance. I remind them that nothing bad is going to happen and that it's okay!  We talk about how to help control their thoughts when they are in "fight or flight mode" (which is what happens to our bodies during stressful situations); and I praise them for being vulnerable and sharing their gift of music with others.

I hope that your child can attend because it will be a very valuable class.  Also, I prefer that parents don't stay for the class in order to take some of the pressure off the kids. It will be 5:45-7pm.

For the actual recital, students will be divided into 2 time groups. I will let you know what group your child is in closer to the date of the recital.  If you need a certain time, please let me know. I'll do my best to accommodate schedules.

  • Students may cancel up to 2 lessons between June 1- August 20th for no charge.

  • Students who wish to cancel 4 or more consecutive lessons and want to keep their lesson day/time in the Fall can reserve it for $75/month per student.  Students who want to cancel but don't need to reserve their lesson day/time in the Fall may do so but there is no guarantee that there will be a spot available in the Fall.

  • Please give as much notice as you can about cancellations so we can reschedule if necessary.  There is no refund for more than 2 non-consecutive cancellations.

  • Please let me know if you have any questions.

AND...

The end of the school year marks a wonderful time to evaluate how much students have learned.  Students will  be given an assessment at the end of May.  It isn't for a grade. It's simply to see how far they have come and areas that we will concentrate on going forward.

I would also like to extend an offer for Summer Camp referrals. Regardless of whether your child participates in our Musical Arts Summer Camp or not, I will give students $25 for every friend they refer to camp who signs up for a week of camp.  Be sure to tell your friends to let us know that you referred them.   I am hoping this will help us spread the word! We had a great turnout last year with very positive feedback so we are taking the best parts of last year and making it even better!  Thank you so much in advance for sending your friends our way!

Can somebody please tell me how it got to be May already?!   Mother's Day is next Sunday and I hope students will perform a song for Mothers and Grandmothers as part of their gifts.

When my boys were little, they'd make me cards or drawings but when they got older I told them the only thing I wanted for a present  was something they each wrote.   I gave them instructions to write about their year, what was going on in their lives or maybe a poem -just anything.

In the beginning they wrote letters saying how great I am -which makes my heart happy but eventually, I had to say that I want letters telling me about their lives so that when I read them years later, I can remember things that happened and how they felt about those events.  They weren't too pleased about this because they actually had to put some effort into it.  But, they always came through for me up until they left for college. I'm guessing they were sparing me from worry by not telling about their shenanigans.  Anyway, now I have a treasured box of memories. I just wish I could remember where I put it.

I hope you all have a fabulous May and, as always, thank you so very much for the opportunity to spend time with your children and be a part of their musical journey!

Hooray for the all the students who had a great spring break!  I can't wait to hear about your trips!  Sometimes a little time away can help us reflect and reset our goals. Since March was a month with 5 weeks for many students, taking off a week didn't hurt their practice ticket numbers too much. I'm guessing they weren't thinking about that at all while spring breaking -as it should be!  But it's back to business now!

We have a recital coming up May 22nd which means there are 7 lessons left before then.  It seems like a long time but it really isn't.  To learn a piece well enough to perform, we need the last couple of weeks prior to the recital to work on tweaking and performing. So students should know their piece very well by the first week in May.  This recital we will also welcome voice and guitar students to the stage as well so it should be a great show!

The end of the school year marks a wonderful time to evaluate how much students have learned.  I will be giving each student an assessment at the end of May.  It isn't for a grade. It's simply to see how far they have come and areas that we will concentrate on going forward.  I will send parents a copy of the assessment and welcome your input!

February 2022 EXCEPTIONAL STUDENT OF THE MONTH

Congratulations to the Exceptional Student of the Month for February  2022, Aiden B.

Aiden and his sister, Lexie, started taking piano lessons with Miss Michele in December 2019. We had limited lessons in 2020 due to the pandemic but they both picked it right back up when they returned.

Aiden holds himself to a very high standard and he did so especially in February as he continued to work on a very challenging song from Harry Potter. In fact, he wanted to play it so much that we made a deal, if he finished learning "The Entertainer", I would arrange the next section of the song for him. He held up his end of the deal and now he is working on the next section.

Take a look at the video to learn more about Aiden and to learn about his plan to make the world a better place when he grows up.

JANUARY  2022 EXCEPTIONAL STUDENT OF THE MONTH

Congratulations to the Exceptional Student of the Month for January 2022, Stella M.

Stella started taking piano lessons with Miss Michele in September. It was evident right from the start that Stella was serious about learning to play the piano. She has consistently been in the top 3 students for earning raffle tickets and she also stays focused and attentive during her lessons.

Stella is an athlete too. She also sings in choir and loves to bake.

Take a look at the video to learn more about Stella and to hear what her mom has to say.  She will also play a tricky song for us that  changes back and forth between holding the left hand down while the right hand plays and vice versa.

Help! My child enjoys piano lessons but doesn't want to practice at home.

I totally get it! I was a student -once upon a time.  I remember going through phases when piano wasn't as important to me as other times.  But thankfully, I didn't give up before reading and playing music became more automatic.

I understand that the first five or so years (give or take a few years) is all about learning to read music and mastering the fundamentals and it can be very challenging at times.  But it is the most important time to put in the time and effort. So how do we help your children push through this phase?  (I say "we" because we are in this together!)

First is the "why". All motivation stems from that little word: "Why". Why did they want to learn to play the piano in the first place? The desire to practice is directly related to the answer to this question.

Now that we know why, we need to know what the goal is.  Are we just hoping to provide  a little brain activity 30 minutes a week or are we going for virtuosity? It's probably somewhere in between.

Now that we know what we are trying to accomplish we need to know what it takes.  This will vary depending on the answer to the previous question. If we are just hoping for a little brain activity from piano lessons then the "how" looks very different than the goal to be a virtuoso.  The amount of time and practice necessary is directly related to this question. It's simple really.  The more we practice, the quicker and better we get at something. Unfortunately, there isn't a shortcut. If a student doesn't practice at all during the week then they are EXACTL Y where they were the previous week, which is fine if you're only looking to stimulate the brain for 30 minutes every week. Anything above that level, requires practice of at least 10-15 per day for young students and 20-30 minutes per day for older students (4-5 days a week).

Now that we know how much practice is necessary, let's figure out when.  I have students tell me every week that they didn't have time to practice. Not even 5 minutes! Poor things are running themselves ragged!   I decided to investigate.  I pulled out my paper and wrote down 24.  I subtracted 10 hours for sleep.  I subtracted 7 hours for school and subtracted an hour for  necessities and chores. I subtracted  here and there for various activities on specific days. Then I  wrote the days of the week on the paper. I wrote down: Before School, After School and After Dinner.  I had my student tell me each day in the upcoming week when they could practice at least 10-15 minutes. Some days they really couldn't practice. But more often than not, they had plenty of time to practice. They had to cut down on the video games or TV a bit but that never hurt anybody.  When we create a schedule on paper it helps us sort through the excuses in our minds.

Now that we know when to practice, we need to know how to make it consistent.  It's all about brushing your teeth.  How long did it take before your kids remembered to brush their teeth without you telling them to?  Not there yet? I get it. That means they need you to tell them to practice. If they automatically brush their teeth every day, then they have developed the habit.  Hooray!  How do we develop habits? We consistently repeat the activity until we just do it without any excuses to distract us.  How do you feel when you don't brush your teeth for a couple of days. (I hope you don't know the answer to this question).  You probably don't feel very good about yourself, maybe like you've lost some control?  How do you feel if you consistently brush your teeth everyday? You probably don't even notice because it's so ingrained in you.  That's when the magic happens!

Practice the piano at Denver Academy of Musical Arts

Now that we know how to make it consistent, we need to know what to practice.   This is where I come in.  You've seen the assignment sheets.  Many many many sheets come back the next week looking exactly the same as the previous week because the kids don't check off any tasks that I've given them.   I know not all kids are check-er off-ers but I know that some don't even look at them at all.  I ask them to play the scale we worked on last week and I get the deer  in the headlights. Most younger students need a parent to sit with them and go over their assignments. Older students just need encouragement and a parent to act like it matters to them.

Some kids apologize to me for not practicing; but it doesn't hurt my feelings if they don't practice. I may get disappointed though because I can see their potential.   My commitment to teaching them doesn't waiver based on their level of commitment to learning.  In school, kids get grades. If they don't do the assignment, they don't get points. It's black and white accountability. We don't do that in music lessons. They master the skills in a song and we move on. They don't master the skills we keep trying until we do. I try to give assignments that will push them but I don't want it to be too frustrating so it's a balancing act for me.  Please communicate with me if you feel that an assignment isn't working for whatever reason. I never want that to be the reason they don't practice. There are a bazillion songs to choose from.

Lastly, when is it okay to quit?  This is a tough one for me because I let my boys quit tennis lessons when they were in first grade because they said they hated it. I thought, "this is supposed to be fun and if they aren't having fun then we move on to something else".  They are grown now and pretty darn better-than-average tennis players despite the lack of formal lessons.  I can only imagine how good they'd be if I wouldn't have let them quit.  Were they miserable? No.  Were they frustrated? Yes. Big difference. If they would have continued, would they have gotten better and therefore, less frustrated and start enjoying it? Most probably. So it comes down to if they get any enjoyment out of it AFTER putting in time and effort not WHILE they are putting in time and effort.

This was a long explanation. Sorry!  Here's your take-aways to get your kids to practice:

Ask why.  What are the short term and long term goals? Write out a practice schedule at the start of every week.  Be consistent to develop a habit.  Make sure they know what they are supposed to practice.  Hold them accountable. Praise them for making progress (mistakes and all).  Communicate with their teachers.  So much easier said than done, I know!

As always, I'm so very grateful for the opportunity to work with your kids.  Each child is a treasure to me regardless of how much they practice. That being said, I love it when they reach the stage when everything starts to click and the only way to get there is by practicing.

POLICIES/PROCEDURES UPDATED

When I changed over from Michele Kennedy Piano Studio to Denver Academy of Musical Arts, I took the advice of other studio owners and created a "term based" tuition.  What I found was that it was a big headache.  I feel it is best and easier to invoice at the beginning of the month for the exact number of lessons in that month rather than billing for 4 lessons no matter what and then figuring out credits at the end of the term.

The "pros" for term-based tuition is that each month is exactly the same and easier for parents to budget.

The "cons" for term-based tuition is that not every student has equal number of lessons in a term and so there must be credits calculated at the end of the term, which is time-consuming.

I will add this info to the Update Form and ask parents to read and sign.  Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.  Thank you!   -Michele

NOVEMBER  2021  EXCEPTIONAL STUDENT OF THE MONTH

Congratulations to the Exceptional Student of the Month for November 2021, Presley S.

Presley started taking piano lessons with Miss Michele only five months ago. She had been taking lessons for 6 months with another teacher.  It was evident right from the start that Presley is a serious music student.  She faithfully practices her scales and chords and requests new and challenging pieces to work on.

Presley loves everything to do with the Arts. She sings, dances, acts and plays the piano.  As you will see in her interview, she is also an animal lover.

Take a look at the video to learn more about Presley and to hear what her mom has to say.  She will also perform two songs for us.  Congratulations Presley!

RECITAL NEWS

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2021

Group One. 3:00PM

Group Two 4:30PM

The recital will be held at the studio. Please arrive 10-15 minutes prior to the start time. Since we are dividing into groups, it should not take more than an hour.  We will do our best to schedule your child in the group that you request.  This is based on attendance numbers. It has nothing to do with skill level or how long the student has been taking lessons.   Please let us know as soon as possible how many will be attending.  Although dressing up isn't required,  it is customary for students to wear something nice (like they might do for other "semi-formal" occasions.)  Refreshments will be served after the concert.

PREPARING FOR THE RECITAL

Students will not have the opportunity to practice on the big piano the day of the recital therefore, it is highly suggested that the students come to the rehearsals scheduled 12/3 at 4pm and/or 12/10 at 6pm.  Students will play for each other and get a feel for the piano and what it feels like to play in front of an audience.

One of the best ways to help with the jitters is to feel prepared. Please ask your child to practice performing by playing for family and friends. Try to have them do this at least once per day.  Video their performance and let them watch it back to see and hear what parts they need to keep working on.  Performing is a skill and, like learning an instrument, it takes repetition.  Learning to manage thoughts while under pressure is a life skill that music students are fortunate to be able to practice by performing.

Very few young students love performing and that is because it's uncomfortable when we feel we are being judged by one singular performance. We want to do our best and feel like we might let others down if we don't play well.   Let your child know that you are proud of him or her no matter how well it goes. This will help alleviate some of the pressure.   Learning to control thoughts before, during and after a performance becomes more manageable with each performance and someday, students may even look forward to playing for others. Hopefully, they'll realize that it is a gift they are sharing rather than something they must endure.

New Term Begins 1/3/2022

The second half of the school year begins January 3, 2022.   We'll send an email with a quick form to complete if your child will be continuing lessons.  If you need to make changes, please let us know as soon as possible.

Students who missed a lesson due to the teacher cancelling will have the option to either receive a refund on 12/31/21 for the missed lesson or apply it to the next term.   Students who cancel lessons can either attend the group make-up lesson on 12/17 or schedule a make up with a teacher if there is availability.

OCTOBER  2021  EXCEPTIONAL STUDENT OF THE MONTH

Congratulations to the Exceptional Student of the Month for October 2021, Eli L.

Eli started taking piano lessons with Miss Michele when he was only 5.  When he first started, even though he took only 15 minute lessons, he quickly caught on to reading music but he was only able to use his pointer fingers to play.  It's hard to believe how far he has come in only 2 years!  He was  chosen this month because he has put his focus into over drive!  He practices faithfully, he is learned 5 songs this month and he already knows Fur Elise!  He also won the Practice Raffle Derby this month by earning the most practice tickets.

Take a look at the video to learn more about Eli and all his hobbies and to hear what his parents and brother has to say about him.  He will also perform "The Star Spangled Banner."

JULY 2021 EXCEPTIONAL PIANO STUDENT OF THE MONTH
EXCEPTIONAL PIANO STUDENT OF THE SUMMER

Please join me in congratulating the Exceptional Piano Student of the Summer, Henry K.

Henry started taking piano lessons about 4 years ago.   When he was in 4th grade, he asked his parents if he could take lessons. This was unusual because they didn't have a piano at the time.

Henry had to switch teachers and he came to me last year. I was BLOWN AWAY at the level of difficulty he was playing! He is very intelligent and mature for his age. He is self motivated and also enjoys learning to play the Clarinet and the Concertina.

Henry's parents, Liz and Jason,  do not have a musical background but they are very supportive of Henry and his musical interests.

Take a look at the video to learn more about Henry and to hear him play a very challenging Scott Joplin piece.

MAY 2021 EXCEPTIONAL PIANO STUDENT OF THE MONTH

Please join me in congratulating the Exceptional Piano Student of the Month for May 2021, Jona S.

Jona started taking piano lessons almost 2 years ago.  He had never played the piano before. Just wait until you hear him play now!

Some would argue that he is naturally gifted and that is why he is so remarkable.  That is only partly true. He is also VERY dedicated and he puts a LOT of time and effort into learning to play the piano.   He is a shining example of the fact that the more practice you do, the better you get and the better you get, the more you enjoy it.  That is true for everything, not just piano.

Jona's parents, Tim and Susana, are very supportive of him and encourage him in all his interests.

Take a look at the video to learn more about Jona and to hear him play three challenging, and very different pieces of music: Maple Leaf Rag, Fur Elise and Jump by Van Halen.

APRIL 2021 EXCEPTIONAL PIANO STUDENT OF THE MONTH

Please join me in congratulating the Exceptional Piano Student of the Month for April 2021, Helen A.

Helen started piano lesson when she was only 4 1/2 years old. She just turned 6 in February.  She is such a delightful child and so intelligent, sweet, kind and funny!  Her ability to focus is off the charts for her age too.  She practices  a lot and seems to really enjoy surprising me with the progress that she makes each week.  I am in awe of her reading skills and her ability to express herself.

Helen's parents, James and Tessa, are very supportive and encouraging and take an active role in her musical development, and it really shows.

Take a look at the video to learn more about Helen and to hear her perform Fur Elise by Beethoven and Musette by Bach.

MARCH 2021 EXCEPTIONAL PIANO STUDENT OF THE MONTH

Please join me in congratulating the Exceptional Piano Student of the Month for March 2021, Jacob L.

Jacob and his brother Eli were two of my first students back in 2019. I learned very quickly how special both boys are.  They are both very intelligent, curious and they have very supportive parents.

Jacob has always been a model student. He has a great attitude and enjoys learning new songs and, since he has a very analytical mind, he also likes learning how everything ties together with music theory.

Jacob is an avid reader. Every week while he's waiting for his brother's lesson, he has a gigantic book that he's reading.  You will learn in his interview what his latest book is. Incredible!

Take a look at his video to learn more about Jacob and to hear him  perform an arrangement of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony.

FEBRUARY 2021 EXCEPTIONAL PIANO STUDENT OF THE MONTH

Please join me in congratulating the Exceptional Piano Student of the Month for February 2021, Addison M.

Addison started taking piano lessons in December of 2019 but we only had in-person lessons January, February and March before we had to switch to Zoom lessons.  Then back again to in-person lessons in September.

Addison was chosen this month because she has a great attitude, she comes to her lessons prepared and she focuses the entire lesson on learning. She also practices a lot and really seems hungry to learn more and more.

Addison is 12 years old. She plays soccer and Aerial and goes to school

at RMSEL (Rocky Mountain School for Expeditionary Learning)  She has a younger sister, Brook and her parents are Kristin and Mark.

Take a look at her video to learn more about Addison and to hear her perform Sonatina in G  Major by Johann Sebastian Bach.
