LESSON REGISTRATION FORMS

Lots of things change between school years so we are asking all returning students to complete a new registration form. New students who have completed a form between June 1 and today do not need to complete one. We promise it won't take long!

EXCEPTIONAL STUDENT OF THE MONTH FOR SEPTEMBER 2022

Are you doing everything right but you didn't get chosen for Student of the Month? 

Keep in mind there are over 50 students enrolled in DAMA and students who are chosen have worked exceptionally hard or have showed exceptional initiative. It's a difficult decision to  make and sometimes it comes down to whether students who have been working on a piece are ready to perform it yet or if they had to cancel lessons during the month. It is not about who is the most talented or who has the most potential. It is about honoring the student who stood out because of their work ethic,  attitude and  initiative. 

Be sure to talk with your teacher if you have questions or concerns.

JACOB L.

The Exceptional Student of the Month award started back in February of 2021 and Jacob was the 2nd student to win and this is his second time earning the award! Jacob and his brother Eli have been taking lessons with Miss Michele since March 2019. Eli also won the award last year, October 2021. Jacob and Eli both keep a strict practice schedule and because of that, they are continually progressing to more advanced pieces.

 

Jacob stood out this month because he has been working on a couple of challenging pieces and has shown continual progress each week. He has a GREAT attitude...even when asked to play the same measure over and over ten times, adding a new note and playing that ten times, adding a new note and playing that ten times, etc. He is laser focused during his lessons and is a joy to be around. Congrats to Jacob! Keep up the great work!

How to Win Student of the Month

  • Focus during lessons

  • Follow directions

  • Have a good attitude

  • Practice and come to lessons prepared

  • Show initiative to learn and improve

  • Attend at least 4 lessons in one month

  • Be ready to perform the song you are working on

Raffle tickets are picked on the 1st of the Month.  Students 7 and younger receive 1 ticket for every 15 minutes of practice. Students 8 and older receive 1 ticket for every 30 minutes of practice. 1 ticket is awarded for each lesson.

The student with the most tickets at the end of the month will receive a medal.  

This year we have created a prestigious new club called the 20 Club. Students who earn at least 40 tickets in one month (20 hours of practicing) will receive a gold medallion with a purple ribbon and be recognized as a member of an elite group.

The UnPlug Club

The UnPlug Club is a social club for kids age 8-14 to play board games and socialize in a supervised setting.   Membership in the club provides  90 minute game sessions for eight weeks at a discounted rate of $75 or $130 for 2 members in the same family. Only 12 memberships will be awarded per season.  Members enjoy first choice of seats and are the first eligible captains at their table.  They are also eligible for the end of the season trophy. Snacks provided.

 

Drop-In Participants  (D-IPs) are welcome to play and enjoy snacks if there is space available. Since D-IPs are not considered members, they may not be eligible for captains of their table.  In voting situations, only members may vote.  The Drop-In rate is $15 for one 90 minute game session. Members may earn credits for D-IP referrals!

Students will learn acting and memorization techniques as well as singing and choreography. They will perform a holiday play at DAMA's winter recital on December 11th.  Students should only commit to this class if they can attend all rehearsals and the performance.

Doors open at 6pm. The first question starts at 6:30

Groups of up to 6 will compete for prizes by playing 10 rounds of music trivia.  Questions may be pop-culture related, music theory, listening skills, name that tune, name the artist, or composer.  Questions will be family friendly and will be broad enough for both adults and kids to be helpful to their team.  There must be at least one adult for every table.  Teams may bring snacks and beverages and there will be a prize for the best decorated table.

 

Tickets go on sale soon! Stay tuned!

6 seats at one table = $80

or 1 adult ticket = $20

1 child ticket (ages 5-15) = $10

 

$100 prize to winning table.

Proceeds go towards building a stage for DAMA.

Isn't is great to get back into a routine? I can sure tell that students are keeping a structured practice schedule again. I think we humans need a sense of structure. Kids may hem and haw when we "remind" them that they must do this or that and it must be done by this certain time. But, as a parent, our main responsibility is getting our offspring ready to navigate life on their own. I believe one of the most important life skills is self discipline and self discipline is learned through structure and expectations.

 

John and Sarah Lintzenich talk about this in the "Student of the Month" Video. Their boys know that practicing the piano is expected and a structure is in place. The results are that their boys are at a point now that they are good at playing the piano and, since we humans enjoy things that we are good at, the boys don't mind practicing anymore (as much, anyway).

 

I have talked with some parents who were made to practice so much as a child that they hated it and don't want to push their children the way they were pushed by their parents. These parents are very good at playing the piano now as adults -by the way. They are taking the complete opposite approach by not creating any practice schedule and not pushing their children to create practicing habits and here is what is happening...and this is without exception... the students are only sitting down at the piano when they feel like it (not often). They don't know how to get started on their own. They are learning the same things over and over again at every lesson because they can't master what they are being taught. They get frustrated and start to lack confidence and it is no longer enjoyable.

 

This is when I question what the motive is for both the parents and the student. If parents are just hoping that someday their child will magically love practicing and someday magically turn into the next superstar musician then I have sad news. But if they truly don't care if their child gets any better and just wants him/her to have fun then that's okay too but please communicate that to their teacher because we human teachers feel that our job is to make our students the best musicians that they can be and if that is at odds with your expectations then it would be quite helpful to know that. We won't stop doing our best to connect with our students' learning styles and create lessons that will hopefully make it fun it practice, but we won't beat ourselves up if we must repeat last week's lesson again.

 

Hey, I get it! Your child's interest in a musical instrument may not be a priority. It isn't in most people's lives. You are probably juggling a 1000 other things and monitoring practice sessions isn't high on the list of necessities. Let's work together on this! Our teachers spell out EXACTLY what our students are supposed to work on each week. We have a chart for them to check off and we ask that you sign their practice sheets. We have incentives so they can work towards a goal. All you have to do is set up the schedule for them and create expectations and follow through. I know it sounds much easier than it actually is...especially the follow through part.

 

If I had a penny for every time a student told me that they didn't have a time to practice, well, I could buy myself a massage. Really? Not even 1 minute all week?! Poor souls are running themselves ragged! Perhaps since screen time activities are free and music lessons are an investment, screen time could be a great incentive for AFTER practicing. Just a thought. It works well for Sarah and John.
