JANUARY 2023
Happy New Year!
Welcome
Miss Ani
We are so excited and honored that Ani Powell will be joining DAMA and working with Katie Rose's piano students! Ani is currently a featured pianist with the Denver Philharmonic! She earned a full scholarship to the University of Denver for her undergraduate degree and she earned her Master's Degree from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Not only is Ani a talented artist, but she also has many years of teaching experience. Welcome Miss Ani!
EXCEPTIONAL STUDENT OF THE MONTH FOR DECEMBER 2022
Are you doing everything right but you didn't get chosen for Student of the Month?
Keep in mind there are almost 60 students enrolled in DAMA and students who are chosen have worked exceptionally hard or have showed exceptional initiative. It's a difficult decision to make and sometimes it comes down to whether students who have been working on a piece are ready to perform it yet or if they had to cancel lessons during the month. It is not about who is the most talented or who has the most potential. It is about honoring the student who stood out because of their work ethic, attitude and initiative.
Be sure to talk with your teacher if you have questions or concerns.
CONGRATULATIONS
FELIX M.
Felix started taking piano lessons with Miss Michele in January 2022. He worked very hard in December not only because he loves to play the piano, but because he was working towards earning a full sized keyboard. His parents worked out an incentive plan for him and he did it! Felix is so much fun to work with! He enjoys playing practical jokes on Miss Michele and he has a great attitude about learning. Watch the video to learn more about Felix.

From Miss Michele's Bench
You'd think after making New Year's resolutions my whole adult life and not keeping any of them all the way through to the end of the year, that I wouldn't bother anymore. It usually has something to do with exercising, eating healthy and saving money. (BTW I am eating french fries, a fried fish sandwich and sipping my diet coke as I write this). After all, Monday is the "government observed" holiday so I'm all good until then right?
Anyway, I think I figured out why I'm not good at keeping my resolutions. It involves rewards and punishments. The reward for not exercising is the no pain thing. The reward for eating like crap is that it tastes good. The reward for spending money is the new shiny stuff. Do the rewards outweigh the punishment that won't be apparent until much later? Reward=instant Punishment= later. It takes self-discipline!
I'm quite disciplined in some areas of life, but that usually involves an outcome that affects other people. I'm not talking about daily chores or hygiene or being on time or stuff that is engrained in us from the time we are born. I'm talking about the extra stuff. For example, if I signed up for an exercise class, I know myself well enough to know that I would ditch the class if I wasn't in the right frame of mind. But... if someone else was counting on me, I would be there. I mop the floor when I'm expecting company, I poke the straw wrappers under the seat of my car if I'm giving someone a ride, I recycle for future generations, I wake up early, but only if I MUST; and yes, even I practice the piano more when I know a performance is coming up.
Perhaps one of my resolutions this year will be to figure out why I need someone else to give me a kick in the pants. I need to kick my own pants! It's either that or go buy a bigger size.
Here's a toast to all of you and your resolutions this year! May you reach your goals and fulfill your dreams!
One final note, thank you so very much for allowing us the opportunity to work with your children to help them pursue their musical goals. Happy New Year!
Best,
